National Unity Platform (NUP) legislators have refused to give heed to their party president, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine, who ordered each one of them who recieved any ‘dirty money’ from Parliament to take it back.

“The controversial UGX 40 million cash was a broad day bribery,” Bobi Wine said, adding that it was such a disgrace for any of his party members to take such ‘dirty money’. The opposition members did not however comply to their president’s earlier deadline of Thursday 16th June 2022 to return the money.

Latest reports indicate that even efforts by the Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Mathias Mpuuga, to persuade the over 30 members to return the monies were futile.

Meanwhile, the Parliament of Uganda stood firm and denied all allegations of bribing members with huge sums of cash, in an attempt to water down Bobi Wine’s claim that MPs, including some who subscribe to NUP, were paid a Shs40 million bribe from Parliament.

Some members of Parliament sided with Parliament, Usuk county MP, Hon. Peter Ogwang said, “I want to challenge those who are blackmailing the image of parliament that we have been paid a UGX 40M bribe, let them tell us who gave them that money.”

In Bobi Wine’s statement, he was very clear that the MPs got the unaccounted for money in cash from Parliament, as NUP and other opposition members recieved it from Speaker Anita Among’s home.

Chairman of Buganda Parliamentary caucus, Hon. Muwanga Kivumbi has however restated that the basis for the statement by the NUP president was based on confessions by some legislators in the party (NUP) that they had gotten money.

“I was in a meeting where some MPs said they went somewhere and were given money,” the MP revealed. “They were told to take that money back to the giver,” he added.

Kivumbi also reiterated that as a senior member of the NUP, finds it immoral, and insensitive for any member to go anywhere to receive such money.
