The Executive Director Uganda Media Centre, Ofwono Opondo has come out to blast Speaker Hon Anita Among over Nyege Nyege event slated for the 15th to 18th of September at Itanda falls in Jinja.
It should be remembered that in 2018 when then Minister of Ethics and integrity Rev. Fr. Simon Lokodo (RIP) said that the government had cancelled the Nyege Nyege event, Ofwono Opondo came out and defended the event.
Ofwono revealed on tweeter saying he had spoken to Minister Jeje Odongo and the organizers of Nyege Nyege were allowed to continue with preparations for their event.
On Tuesday September 6, 2022, Speaker of Parliament of Uganda Anita Among gave a directive to have the festival stopped citing imorality it brings about.
“We are talking about the morality of this country; we are talking about our children. You are trying to promote tourism at the expense of our children? We are not going to allow this function to take part.” She said.
With these statements, Ofwono Opondo was quick to defend the illest and biggest event in Africa saying Anita could have done better and not turned parliament into a law enforcement organ.
“But surely @Parliament_Ug and @AnitahAmong could have done better by referring to how #NyegeNyege 2018 was handled successfully without causing this unnecessary controversy. Please don’t turn parliament into a law enforcement organ,” he tweeted.
