2021 hugely marked a pivotal milestone for Africa with the launch of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). With a market potential of over 1.4 billion people from 54 African countries, this initiative holds immense promise for fostering economic growth and unlocking new opportunities for the continent’s entrepreneurs, particularly women.

According to the World Bank, AfCFTA is projected to boost Africa’s income by $450 billion by 2035 and significantly elevate intra-African exports by over 81%. Women already contribute a substantial 33% to Africa’s GDP and dominate 70% of informal cross-border trade.

However, critical to this transformative agenda are crucial questions: How can women be empowered to harness the full benefits of AfCFTA? These questions lie at the heart of Zuba Network’s new docuseries ‘Women Beyond Borders.

Across the continent, African women are not waiting idly; they are forging ahead, harnessing technology, tapping into local resources, and building brands with global appeal. Their initiatives vividly illustrate the profound impact women can have in unlocking AfCFTA’s potential.

‘Women Beyond Borders’ brings inspiring stories of five successful female entrepreneurs from Uganda and Ethiopia who are driving intra-African trade.

Witness their journey of resilience and empowerment in this docuseries, featuring expert insights from the African Union, the Uganda Exports Promotions Board, and the Private Sector Foundation Uganda.

‘Women Beyond Borders’ was produced by award-winning Ugandan Journalist and Documentary Producer Nila Yasmin, with support from the African Union Media Fellowship program implemented by GIZ.
