Celebrating World Teachers Day: The Unwavering Dedication of Teachers in the Digital Age
October 5th marks World Teachers Day, a global celebration honoring the tireless efforts of educators who shape the minds of future generations. This year’s theme, The Teachers We Need for the Education We Want: The Global Imperative to Reverse the Teacher Shortage, resonates deeply as we acknowledge the critical role teachers play in integrating technology into the classroom.

In Uganda, Airtel’s partnership with UNICEF has brought digital learning to over 100 underserved schools, including Spire Road Primary School in Jinja. Here, we met Teacher Francis Etyang, the ICT and Science Teacher, and current Chairperson of UNATU (Uganda National Teachers Union) in Jinja City.

The Story of Teacher Francis Etyang

At Spire Road Primary School located in Jinja, Teacher Francis Etyang is a beacon of inspiration. His passion for teaching knows no bounds, and his dedication to his students is unparalleled. To Francis, being a teacher means being a creative, parent, nurturer, counselor, friend, and lifelong learner. His reward? Seeing his pupils thrive.

As we observed Francis teach primary five pupils about food security, his innovative approach became apparent. With just one click, his students explored interactive YouTube videos, vividly illustrating food storage, pest control, and planting. He adapts teaching methods for students with visual and hearing impairments, ensuring equal opportunities for all.

Francis seamlessly weaves technology into his lessons, leveraging a donation of computers and internet through an ongoing partnership between Airtel and UNICEF to scale digital learning at schools in Uganda and across 13 African countries where Airtel operates. His approach includes; utilizing digital tools for interactive lessons, providing assistive gadgets for students with disabilities and encouraging collaborative learning through technology among others.

“To be a global teacher, you must embrace ICT skills,” Francis emphasizes. “Technology bridges the gap between theory and practice, making learning engaging and effective.”

Airtel’s initiative provides more than just hardware and internet access; it empowers teachers like Francis to harness technology’s potential. By sharing his skills with colleagues and even international audiences, Francis becomes a champion for teachers and students alike.

As we celebrate World Teachers Day, Airtel extends heartfelt appreciation to all teachers who tirelessly shape young minds. Your dedication, creativity, and perseverance inspire us.

Mr. Manoj the Managing Director of Airtel Uganda added his voice to the rest of Africa saying, “To all teachers, we honor your unwavering commitment to education. May this World Teachers Day bring you love, recognition, and appreciation from wherever you are. Your impact is immeasurable, and we salute you.”

As we celebrate Teacher Francis and his peers, we acknowledge the transformative power of teachers in the digital age. They bridge the technology gap, foster inclusive learning, and inspire future leaders.
