The second edition of the Central Association of Learners of the French Language in Uganda (CALUFU) has firmly established itself as a transformative force in language education. Hosted at Seeta High School in Mukono Mbalala, this vibrant gathering attracted over 300 students from 13 schools—including renowned institutions like Namilyango College, St. Maria Goretti, and Seeta High School itself—showcasing a remarkable expansion in scope and ambition since its 2023 debut.
This Year’s Theme: A New Era of Learning
Centered around the theme “Enhancing Soft Skills Among the Young Learners of French in Uganda in the 21st Century,” this year’s edition focused on nurturing critical competencies such as communication, collaboration, creativity, and cultural intelligence. CALUFU’s leadership made it clear: in today’s interconnected world, linguistic fluency must be coupled with robust soft skills to prepare students for meaningful global engagement.
A Celebration of Immersion and Talent
The festival brimmed with interactive and immersive activities. From French culinary arts, poetry, and drama to a dazzling fashion showcase, outdoor sports, and campfire storytelling—all conducted in French—students were challenged and inspired to stretch beyond classroom learning into real-life applications. This multidimensional approach is fast becoming CALUFU’s hallmark, setting a new standard for language education in Uganda.
International Endorsement and Investment
Representing the French Ambassador, Louise Bay, the French attaché for Education and Culture, reinforced the global significance of the French language. “French is a tool for greatness worldwide,” she affirmed, reminding students that French proficiency can open doors across continents. Bay emphasized the French Embassy’s commitment to initiatives like CALUFU and revealed continued scholarship opportunities for Ugandan students to study in France—covering tuition, living expenses, and more. “French on your résumé is more than an accomplishment—it’s a gateway to top-tier opportunities,” she noted.
Vision and Leadership: APFO’s Guiding Hand
Dr. Agatha Tumwine, President of the Association of Teachers of French (APFO), hailed CALUFU as a beacon of excellence in immersive learning. She reaffirmed the commitment to making CALUFU an annual event and expressed deep gratitude to the French teachers whose unwavering dedication fuels the initiative. “This festival is proof of what is possible when we work together. To our participants: your future is bright—embrace it boldly,” Tumwine declared. She also called attention to ongoing challenges, particularly in convincing some schools to prioritize such initiatives, but remained optimistic about overcoming these barriers through persistence and collaboration.
A Festival Fueled by Dedication
Mr. John Bosco Kwizera, President of CALUFU Central Region, shed light on the immense behind-the-scenes efforts required to bring CALUFU to life. He applauded the teachers’ resilience and the sacrifices made to ensure robust student participation despite challenges. “It takes tireless advocacy and commitment to make this happen,” Kwizera said, underscoring the festival’s dependence on the passion and persistence of French educators across Uganda.
A Home for Growth: Seeta High’s Role
Mr. Boniface Ssebukalu, headteacher of Seeta High School, welcomed CALUFU with pride and enthusiasm. “This initiative aligns perfectly with our vision of providing holistic education. Beyond classroom learning, CALUFU connects our students to the world, preparing them for careers and friendships across borders,” Ssebukalu stated, commending the organizers for a well-executed and impactful event.
A Media Perspective: Benjamen Emuk’s Reflections
Adding depth to the narrative, respected media personality and our writer Benjamen Emuk, who attended both the inaugural and second editions of CALUFU, offered a unique comparative insight. Emuk praised the significant progress made, noting, “The evolution from the first to the second edition is remarkable. You can see real growth in participation, organization, and the diversity of activities. The students are more confident, and the festival feels much more expansive and dynamic this year.” His perspective underscored CALUFU’s upward trajectory and growing reputation as a national model for innovative language learning.
Voices of the Participants: A Student’s View
Ssentongo Kisakye, a student at Namilyango College, passionately praised the initiative, calling it “the best ever in life, one aimed at shaping the future of students.” Kisakye emphasized the unique value of CALUFU, adding, “At CALUFU, we learn very exciting things that we never get to learn in class, and if applied anywhere by participants, it will do a great deal in helping them navigate their day-to-day lives.” His testimony reflected the deep personal and educational impact the festival has on its young participants.
A Transformative Milestone for Uganda
The success of CALUFU’s second edition has reinforced its standing as more than just a festival—it’s a national movement transforming language education. By weaving together cultural experiences, skill-building, and global connections, CALUFU is shaping a new generation of Ugandans ready to excel on the world stage.
Looking Ahead: Sustaining Momentum
With a clear roadmap for future editions, including expanding its reach, deepening immersive experiences, and strengthening international partnerships, CALUFU’s vision remains ambitious and inspiring. Uganda’s leadership in innovative, experiential language education is shining brighter with every edition, and with champions like APFO, the French Embassy, passionate teachers, and engaged students, the journey promises even greater achievements ahead.
