When Mulungi Allen Nagawa speaks about her past, she calls it a series of setbacks that disguised themselves as stepping stones. Today, she stands at the helm of The Mighty Tours and Travel, preparing to mark six years in business with a red-carpet gala at Hotel Africana on October 31.
Her rise has been anything but conventional. Born in 1994 in Nsambya, Lukuli, Mulungi was raised in a modest two-room home as one of seven children. Her late father, a Reverend, struggled to keep the family afloat, while her mother worked tirelessly to provide.
Education offered no guarantees. Attempts at law school collapsed, small businesses failed, and she spent years chasing opportunities that slipped away. Then came an unexpected twist: a visit to Kampala’s Ambassador House in search of NGO work. The NGO was long gone, but a tours and travel company had taken its place. That accidental encounter launched a career.
Within a few months, Mulungi became the company’s best marketer, selling trips to destinations she had never seen. By 2019, she was ready to register her own company. The early days were grueling – her first Dubai trip flopped, and the COVID-19 pandemic nearly brought her business to its knees.
But persistence prevailed. In 2023, she led a successful European tour across seven countries, cementing her place in Uganda’s travel sector. Today, her firm handles corporate clients like Mirembe Beddings and Nsambya Furniture.
“I was born without a sense of smell,” she says, “but I can smell my destiny. And I know God is not done with me yet.” Mulungi says
Anticipation for the Six-Year Milestone
Preparations are in full swing for the October 31 anniversary celebration. Organizers promise a glamorous evening featuring entertainment, testimonials, and a tribute to Mulungi’s late father, whose influence shaped much of her faith and determination.
For clients and peers alike, the event will be a recognition not only of Mulungi’s success but also of the resilience it takes to build a travel brand from scratch in Uganda’s competitive market.
