Kampala and Wakiso residents have this Tuesday morning woken up to scenes of heavy military presence on the streets as government anticipates a wave of protests.

According to police, they on Monday landed on reports that enraged supporters of the National Unity Platform party president Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert aka Bobi Wine were organizing civil disobedience which they say is contrary to the constitution of Uganda.

Police say their intelligence agencies have retrieved leaflets and social media posts discouraging the inauguration of Gen. Yoweri Tibuhaburwa Museveni who was announced as the winner of the hotly contested general elections.

“We have received information from credible sources that a section of opposition politicians are planning nationwide violent demonstrations and riots beginning with Kampala Metropolitan area tomorrow (9/3/2021). The organizere are mobilising the public using social media and leaflets with wordings that read ‘Time is Now’. Join Nationwide protests to fight for our victory. ‘Tajja Kulayira’ ” Luke Owoyesigire, the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson says in a press statement.

“We have deployed strategically to counter these illegal acts and we are continuing with vigilance. We want to warn the organisers of these unlawful demonstrations to desist from participating in any unlawful activities. The police will not hesitate to arrest and charge in courts of law anyone who will be found participating in these illegal activities,” he adds in another bit of the statement.
