A man from Nairobi’s Kibera area was on Tuesday sentenced to life imprisonment for allegedly forcefully stealing Ksh. 30,000 approximately Shs1 million and a mobile phone from his boss, a Chinese national, in Kilimani.

The offender, identified as Robert Kubasu, was sentenced by Kibera Senior Principal Magistrate Esther Boke after the prosecution provided strong evidence against him. Five persons had been presented before the court by the prosecution to testify against the suspect.

According to reports, Kubasu committed the offence in September 2019 at Silver Harbour apartments when he randomly encountered his employer, Chen Daisheng, inside an elevator in the apartment block.

“I opened the main door of the unit and all of a sudden I saw Robbert removing a panga and started threatening me by waving and shouting a language that I could not understand,” Daisheng told the court.

Because of the language barrier, Daisheng’s house help would later inform him that Kubasu wanted Ksh.30,000 to which the Chinese national complied and handed it over to the accused before he fled the scene.

“He waved the panga to me and threatened to cut me. He demanded that I give him Sh30, 000 and after that, he ran away,” the court was told.

Daisheng would soon after report the matter to Kilimani Police Station and the accused was arrested.

Magistrate Boke made the sentence after Court Prosecutor Nancy Kerubo asked for tough punishment.

The offender has since been given 14 days to appeal to the sentence if he so wishes.
