The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) has unveiled the 3rd cohort of University beneficiaries of the 2021 scholarships.

The Program according to ICPAU is one of the Institute’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Initiative which aims to aid best performing University students to pursue professional accounting courses free of charge.

Beneficiaries will not pay any money since ICPAU will meet all the costs from registration all the way to examinations.

Speaking at the unveiling event held Tuesday 24,2022 at Protea Hotel in Naguru, Kampala, CPA Constance Othieno Mayende, the 9th President of ICPAU said the occasion is a lifetime opportunity for upcoming accounting practitioners to fit into the profession.

Today is a historical day, especially in the professional Journey of the beneficiaries of the 3rd cohort of the ICPAU Scholarships scheme. This is a lifetime opportunity that will usher you into the accountancy professional world,” he said.

Othieno congratulated the 4 lucky students having being selected to benefit from the programme up from over 206 applicants.

Established way back in 2019, with the aim of nurturing talent among the young people by providing an opportunity to pursue the CPA course, the programme has so far seen over 30 beneficiaries in the first and second cohort of the CPA programme.

Othieno added that,” the scholarship program is important to us as the institute because it is one of the avenues through which the institute can increase the number of CPAs in our bid to promote professionalism in accountancy in Uganda.”

Owek. Professor CPA Twaha Kigongo who graced the event as a chief guest highlighted the need for the beneficiaries of the programme to exercise professionalism in the accounting sector.

The beneficiaries were picked from both public and private chartered universities and were awarded scholarships to undertake the CPA course to qualify as professional accountants.

Kigongo told the beneficiaries not to rush to get rich instantly but should exercise patience if they are to achieve their desired goals and as well avoid quack work.

“Accounting prepares you to be great entrepreneurs and it’s a hugely rewarding profession if you are patient, loyal and above all stick to the code of ethics to protect the integrity,” Kigongo said.

As part of the CPA learning framework, students are required to demonstrate their knowledge and skills through attaining practical experience. The major fields are financial reporting, management accounting, taxation, auditing, financial management, Information Technology, insolvency practice, communication skills, personal skills and organizational skills among others.
