Kanyamunyu trial extended

The trial of businessman Mathew Kanyamunyu indicted with the murder of child rights activist Kenneth Watmon Akena at Lugogo in Kampala has been pushed to October 27th.

Kanyamunyu is battling the charges together with his brother Joseph Kanyamunyu and girlfriend Cynthia Munwangari.

The trial was expected to resume this morning but according to the High Court Registry, it has been postponed following an administrative meeting held yesterday.

Prosecution alleges that the accused and others still at large on November 12, 2016, along Kampala-Jinja Road opposite Malik car bond with malice aforethought caused the death of Akena.

Kanyamunyu is suspected to have shot Akena in the stomach over the denting of his car. Akena died a day after at Norvik Hospital, on Bombo Road in Kampala.

Joseph Kanyamunyu was added on the charge for purportedly hiding the pistol that Kanyamunyu allegedly used to shoot Akena.

The trial was halted in February this year after presiding judge Steven Mubiru indicated that the time allocated to him to handle a criminal session in Kampala was out and that he had supervisory roles to do at his work station at Gulu High court.

However, according to the Judiciary’s communication officer Jamson Karemani, Justice Mubiru was recalled to handle the case to completion together with other criminal cases.

Justice Mubiru abandoned the trial after listening to 12 witnesses including the late Akena’s relatives, investigating officers and a senior government Analyst Robinah Kirinya who examined police exhibits and found out that they had gun powder and matching DNA.

At the time of suspension of the trial, thirteen witnesses had testified in the matter including Robinah Kirinya, a principal analyst from the Government Analytical Laboratory (GAL), who told court that gunshot residues were found on Kanyamunyu’s clothes.

It should be noted that about a fortnight ago, Kanyamunyu reached out to Akena’s family and apologised to them.
