To digitally enhance access to education, new skills and open up youth in Uganda to opportunities in the world, Roke Telkom, a Ugandan-owned telecom firm and Hello World, a UK-based charity that provides access to digital education for remote and marginalized communities, have partnered to refurbish a youth e-learning hub in Seguku, Wakiso.

The solar-powered, e-learning computer booths known as HelloWorld Hubs are designed to provide hard-to-reach communities with access to educational software, games, video, and communication platforms. They also aim to provide people with the opportunity to connect with the rest of the world, have a voice in their community, educate themselves, and start on the path to economic empowerment.

Michael Mukasa, Chief Commercial Officer at Roke Telkom said, “We have been partners with Hello World to provide digital access to online learning tools in remote areas since 2019. Over 41 communities have so far been reached with plans to cover 46 more before the end of 2023 in Uganda both in Kampala and upcountry.”

Roke Telkom has since 2016 supported Ugandans through its Corporate Social Responsibility dubbed Roke Gives Back, to improve the livelihoods of individuals in the communities within which we operate especially through providing internet solutions, education and food stuff.

Fiona Komugisha, the country manager at Hello world highlighted, “Our partnership with Roke Telkom is central to our implementation and roll out plan across the country. Roke provides high speed unlimited connectivity for all the digital learning hubs across the country. Communities are able to receive information, learn and get connected to the rest of the world.”

She added, “These communities include, areas in Nakivale refugee settlement, Wakiso, Hoima, Kasese, Kabarole and we have plans to cover Northern uganda specifically in Gulu, Lira, Yumbe, Bidibidi refugee settlement and Arua as well as eastern in Soroti, Mbale, Jinja, and Iganga.”

“Our hope is that everyone, everywhere in Uganda will have access to some form of education made possible by the internet and technology. Roke Telkom will continue to work with our new partners to make this a reality,” Mukasa concluded.
