On the Women’s Singles side, defending champion and top-ranked Iga Swiatek of Poland continues to look a strong bet to triumph overall, following comfortable wins over Cristina Bucsa, Claire Liu and Xin Wang.
Swiatek said she was most happy with “the way I kept my focus throughout the whole match” following her third round win over Wang.
She added: “Just the fact that I know I keep feeling better and better every day, and that’s kind of what I wanted to achieve in this tournament. I’m glad that I kind of feel the rhythm a little bit better on every match. I’m just happy that I was disciplined till the end.”
One of the surprise contenders emerging as a threat to Swiatek is Coco Gauff, while other players to watch include Bernarda Pera and Beatriz Haddad Maia. Gauff says she would love to play night matches at the French Open, criticizing a lack of such matches for women – though she admits that none of her fellow players have a desire to play under lights at Roland Garros.
“I don’t know if the night session amongst the players is a popular hotspot, to be honest. I guess for the TV and that’s the prime spot, maybe yes, it does suck in that sense,” said the American. “But amongst the players and from my conversations, I don’t think a lot of people want that spot just because it is a late night.”
On the Men’s Singles side, two of the unsung favorites which have caught the eye are Dane Holger Ruge and Norwegian Casper Ruud, who are looking to upset the apple cart for the likes of Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
“I don’t feel so relaxed, even if I might look it,” said Ruud after his hard-fought triumph over Zhang Zhizhen. “Maybe I’m a good actor, but every match is stressful, and physically and mentally tough. This is the first year I’m coming here to defend a big result, having made the final last year. I feel some extra pressure, but if you say that I look calm, then I’ll take it as a compliment.”
