UMA elections: “All members will have to come and vote from Kampala”

The Uganda Musician’s Association (UMA) have set new new dates for this year’s elections that will strictly take place at one location – the National Theatre Gardens.

In a press release dated 14th June 2022, the musician’s association disclosed that they had chosen the 28th of June 2022 as the new date set for the general elections.

Mr. Geoffrey Ekongot, the Chairman UMA Electoral Committee further revealed that the elections shall be held by secret- ballot and that the elections shall be carried out at one polling centre in Kampala for proper supervision. The decision was ultimately made on the 10th of June by the UMA-Policy Board.

This follows the recent halting of the UMA elections exercise on 6th June 2022 due to technical challenges faced with the digital platform sought from National Information Technology Authority (NITA-U) which rendered the electoral exercise unable to deliver or demonstrate a free and fair result, a decision was made to choose another election date and a more viable method.

“Following guidance from the UMA Policy Board, I have decided to organize the polls in the next two weeks so that the association does not continue any longer without leadership,” Ekongot said.

“Due to the high cost of organizing country-wide elections, we have decided that our members will have to come and vote from Kampala. It was a difficult decision to make considering the financial circumstance of some of our members, but it was the last option available,” Vice Chairperson, UMA Policy Board – Sophie Gombya, added.

Meanwhile, the candidates will be expected to continue campaigning and carrying voter education. Various activities shall be conducted to engage members towards election day, according to UMA.
