SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv can look forward to a classic Premier League rivalry, as Liverpool and Manchester United meet at Anfield on the evening of Sunday 5 March 2023.
DStv and GOtv is the only true home of football in Africa, offering a range and depth of action that no other rival can match – it’s literally ‘Unbeatable Football’! If you’re going to spend your money on something, it may as well be on the best football in the world.
While the Reds have endured a miserable season on the domestic front, the Red Devils have grown impressively under the guidance of manager Erik ten Hag and look strong contenders to secure a top-four finish.
One of the driving forces behind United’s improvement has been the scoring form of Marcus Rashford, who has been warned against complacency by his manager: “I don’t know when it [Rashford’s form] will stop but if you are satisfied with it, then it will,” noted Ten Hag.
“And because satisfaction goes to laziness, you have to keep investing every day. When he keeps the investment and keeps the focus in every game and brings the energy and belief in, he will keep scoring. He has the skills to score with right, with left and with his head. It’s about him getting into position.”
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, meanwhile, wants his side to build some momentum: “Yes, I think [we can go on a run] but we have to show that,” said the Reds boss.
“It was incredibly difficult last year, and it’s always incredibly difficult. If you go through the games, I’m pretty sure we won some of them late, we weren’t always brilliant, we forced luck here and there and had other games where we were really flying, an early lead. Different moments.”
Key players
Mohamed Salah – The Egyptian has not been his usual explosive self, but nonetheless remains a potent attacking threat. He will hope to find the back of the net and have Anfield rocking in search of a key victory over their arch rivals.
Marcus Rashford – The United forward is enjoying the best season of his career, providing key goals regardless of whether he is played through the middle or on either flank. Rashford will look to score against Liverpool for a second time this term.
Head-to-head stats
In head-to-head stats, Liverpool and Man United have met in 238 matches across all competitions since 1894. The Red Devils have claimed 90 wins compared to 80 for the Reds, while 68 games have been drawn.
When the teams met earlier this season, at Old Trafford in August 2022, United claimed a 2-1 home win thanks to goals from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford.
Battles to watch
Jurgen Klopp v Erik ten Hag – Ten Hag secured a key win over Liverpool when the teams met earlier this season, but Klopp will be itching for revenge on home soil and has surely got a tactical surprise or two up his sleeve.
Jordan Henderson v Casemiro – Midfield has been one of Liverpool’s weak points this season, but Henderson will be fired up for his personal duel with Casemiro, who has made a huge difference to United’s control of the ‘engine room’.
Darwin Nunez v Raphael Varane – Nunez’s finishing can be erratic, but his energy, speed and physicality make him an intimidating attacking presence. The experienced and composed Varane will need to be at the top of his game.
