The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Bank of Uganda (BoU) have taken a significant step towards enhancing financial inclusion and economic growth in Uganda with the launch of an interactive remittance dashboard. This innovative tool provides a comprehensive overview of the country’s remittance landscape, offering insights into transaction values and volumes, sending and receiving countries, transfer channels, termination methods, and the geographic distribution of remittances across Uganda’s districts.
According to data from the dashboard, Uganda recorded over 16 million remittance transactions in 2025, with an average value of $152. The United States emerges as the largest source of inflows, contributing $702 million (28% of the total), followed closely by Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, and Canada. A notable trend is the increasing reliance on digital channels, with nearly three-quarters of inbound remittances being received through mobile money accounts.
The dashboard was officially unveiled by Deputy Governor Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba, who emphasized that remittances are more than statistics—they are a lifeline for millions of Ugandan households.
“This dashboard will help us better understand the trends and harness the potential of these vital funds for national development.” He added.
The dashboard reveals that remittance inflows reached $2.5 billion in 2025, equivalent to approximately 3.8% of GDP, playing a vital role in supporting household livelihoods nationwide.
The interactive dashboard is expected to have far-reaching implications for Uganda’s economy, by providing policymakers, researchers, and the private sector with accurate and timely data.
It will inform evidence-based decision-making, drive innovation, and enhance financial inclusion. The dashboard will also help identify gaps and opportunities in the remittance market, enabling stakeholders to develop targeted solutions to increase the flow of remittances and improve the welfare of Ugandan families.
One of the key benefits of the dashboard is its potential to promote transparency and accountability in the remittance sector. By making data publicly available, IFAD and BoU aim to foster trust and confidence among users, encouraging them to leverage formal channels for their transactions. This, in turn, is expected to increase the volume of remittances flowing through official channels, contributing to the country’s economic growth.

The launch of the remittance dashboard is part of IFAD’s broader efforts to support Uganda’s economic development. Through its projects, IFAD has been working with small-scale farmers and rural communities to improve agricultural productivity, increase market access, and enhance resilience to climate change. The dashboard is expected to complement these efforts by providing critical data that can inform agricultural policies and programs.
As Uganda continues to navigate the complexities of economic development, initiatives like the remittance dashboard will play a crucial role in shaping the country’s future. By harnessing the power of data and technology, Uganda can unlock new opportunities for growth, reduce poverty, and improve the livelihoods of its citizens.
