The Uganda Police Spokesperson, Fred Enanga has refuted media reports pinning Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Andrew Agume as the officer who tormented presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine.
On November 3, a policeman was captured on video and still cameras using a metallic tool to hammer and smashed car windows of Bobi Wine, outside the Electoral Commission nomination centre at Kyambogo University.
According to a report by the local publication, Daily Monitor, the officer was allegedly identified as ASP Andrew Agume.
Mr. Agume allegedly commanded and participated in the crashing of Bobi Wine’s car, pepper-sprayed the presidential candidate before dragging him out and throwing him into a police van.
However, Enanga while addressing the media at the Uganda Media centre on Monday said that these are false reports carried out by ‘lazy journalists’ who don’t take time to investigate the real ‘story’.
Enanga added that the police officer in question survived an assassination attempt on his way back home by the National Unity Platform ‘hooligans’.
He says that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has launched an investigation into the matter to ascertain the hooligans who almost took the life of Mr. Agume.
He also accused several online publications of copying the same from Monitor without having facts.
According to the Daily Monitor, this is not the first time Mr Agume has done this.
He has been involved or has participated in similar violent attacks against opposition leaders in the past in his operational area of Kasangati, Wakiso.
Some of the previous victims of his brutality include former leader and presidential candidate of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Dr Kizza Besigye.
