The deputy speaker of Parliament Hon. Among Anita has boosted the Ateker cup with Shs20 million in a quest to see Teso’s most embraced footballing dream come to reality.
Anita, who is one of the biggest supporters of sports in Teso handed the cash to the tournament CEO Isaac Olupot in the presence of the Kasilo MP, Elijah Okupa, and other tournament organizers in her office.
The money is targeted to sponsor the tournament prize among other activities to see the smooth running and conclusion of the tournament.
Before the 20 million boost, the tournament winner was going to receive a cash prize of 2 million shillings and a trophy, however, the money has been increased to 5 million shillings plus a bull, trophy, and medals. Second place will walk away with 3 million shillings and medals while the 3rd and 4th will both get 500,000 shillings.
According to the technical director of the tournament, Ismael Edu, this money is a big boost to them as the organizers because they have been running the tournament on their own.
“This is a huge boost to us, she is the first person to give us this kind of financial support. We are happy for this,” he said in a phone interview with this website.
He also confirmed that the finals of this prestigious tournament will be played on 26th March at Soroti Oligoi Stadium.
“The finals will be played o 26th March at Oligoi international stadium and the guest of honor will be the deputy speaker of parliament. We handed our invite to her and we hope she will appear to grace the event since she has showed her support to us. We have also invited all Teso MPs,” he said.
There will also be an individual award dinner on 5th April, at Timisha hotel in Soroti where the best of tournament will be awarded. This will include goalkeeper of the tournament, top scorer, most valuable player, best coach among others. Each will receive an award plus 100,000 shillings
Edu adds that the second edition will be played late this year and there are plans to include Teso Kenya and Karamoja.
