The LC5 Chairperson Soroti District Local Government, George Michael Egunyu has been declared unopposed for the Mayorship position for the newly created Soroti City ahead of the forthcoming general elections.

Egunyu who served as LC5 chairperson Soroti district for 10 years between 2011, 2016 to 2020 was on Tuesday declared unopposed by NRM district Electoral Commissioner Musa Oroma after his nominations.  Before, he served as Mayor Soroti Municipality from 2001 to 2006.

Oroma said there have been no other candidates who have shown interest in competing for the position of Mayorship for Soroti City. He said Friday elections for Soroti City will only be for City Divisional Mayors, City Councilors.

After being declared unopposed, Egunyu said “I have been tested and I strongly believe that I have worked for the people. The 20 years I have been serving the people of Soroti district and municipality are enough and leadership is all about striving for the best at the right time.

Egunyu said locals are still facing challenges. Water scarcity, poor leadership, unemployment opportunities, especially for the youth, something he wants to address.  He adds that Teso leaders should unit for the development of the region rather than spending time on politicking and yet the common people needs services

Meanwhile Simon Peter Edoru , the LCV-5 aspirant Soroti district  was also declared unopposed. Edoru is the current Vice –Chairperson LC-5 Soroti. He is a councilor representing the people of Tubur Town Council at Soroti district Local government.

Edoru said “I have been in the political circles as well. I hope to serve my people”.
