Prior to the January 14th polls, Government switched off internet to allow Ugandans vote peacefully following intelligence that some elements were planning to use internet and social media to incite the public into a post-election insurrection.

Whereas Uganda Communication Commission (UCC), the regulatory body later restored internet, popular social media platforms such has Facebook and Twitter remained blocked until today, Tuesday when government lifted the ban.

Ogwang tweeted saying, “Internet and Social media services have been fully restored. We apologize for the inconveniences caused, but it was for the security of our country. Let’s be constructive, NOT destructive consumers/ users of social media.”

Uganda has over 3.2m Facebook users and over 600,000 Twitter users. Whereas Twitter services have been restored, Facebook remained switched off.

A section of Ugandans have been “illegally” using Virtual Private Network (VPN) to access social media platforms.
