24-year-old Man Arrested for Stealing Church Offertories

Police at Entebbe is holding a 24-year-old man who was arrested on Sunday after he was caught red-handed stealing church offertories.

Isaac Mugerwa, a resident of Kisubi was doomed when he this time around tried to steal Shs643,000 from church.

According to police, Mugerwa has admitted to the allegations claiming she was doing so to fend for her family after her husband abandoned her with their children.

“The church had made several complaints of the offertory being stolen by unknown people. On Sunday, one church member was observant and saw Mugerwa swapping the offertory bag,” Police said.

According to police, for several months, offertories have been getting lost and church management was puzzled on who was behind it.

However, after the arrest, Mugerwa admitted to stealing the offertory to fend for himself since he was unemployed.

“He told detectives that he observed the offertory bags, went and manufactured his own that looked similar and would swap the church offertory bags with empty ones he had manufactured,” police said.

Police investigations also found that Mugerwa had several offertory bags at his home from various churches around Kampala and it is suspected they have always fallen prey to him.

Police has urged Churches to be on the lookout for people like him.

Mugerwa has been charged with theft.
