In an effort to make premium entertainment more affordable and accessible, MultiChoice Uganda has introduced a new initiative dubbed the “Ka Weekie” campaign, offering 7-day subscription packages for DStv and GOtv users.

Our Writer Emuk Benjamen engaged on an interview session with Colin Asiimwe, Head of Marketing at MultiChoice Uganda, and Rinaldi Jamugisa, PR and Communications Manager, to unpack the launch, customer expectations, and the future of this product.

Emuk: Congratulations on the launch of Ka Weekie. To start us off, how long is this product going to be available? Is it a permanent offer or just a temporary promotion?

Colin Asiimwe:
“Thank you, Benjamen. Right now, Ka Weekie is here to stay. It’s not a flash promotion. We designed it as a long-term solution to meet the evolving needs of our customers. We want it to be a part of our permanent product offering so customers can always enjoy flexibility.”

Emuk: Interesting! But I noticed Ka Weekie packages apply to selected bouquets only. Why doesn’t it apply to higher packages like DStv Compact Plus or DStv Premium?

Colin Asiimwe:
“That’s a great observation. We focused Ka Weekie on our most popular mid-tier and entry-tier bouquets where we observed the highest demand for affordability and flexibility. For now, Compact Plus and Premium remain monthly packages, primarily because of the nature of their content rights, including premium sports and blockbuster movies, which are licensed differently. However, we’re monitoring feedback closely, nothing is off the table in the future.”

Emuk: Now let’s talk customer behavior. Suppose someone buys a Ka Weekie package, can they later switch to another package? Maybe even to a monthly plan if they wish?

Rinaldi Jamugisa:
“Absolutely. Customers remain in full control. If a customer buys a 7-day package and later decides they want to move to a higher package or shift to a full monthly plan, they can do so at any time. It’s completely seamless through our app, via mobile money, or through our service centers. Flexibility is at the heart of Ka Weekie.”

Emuk: Some skeptics would argue that when companies roll out flexible or discounted products, it’s sometimes a temporary ‘giving back’ gesture. Then, before you know it, boom — prices shoot up or the product is phased out. How would you respond to that concern?

Colin Asiimwe:
(Smiling) “We hear those concerns, and they’re valid. But let me assure you: Ka Weekie isn’t about quick wins or temporary charity. It’s about adapting to the lifestyles of our customers, especially in an economy where weekly and daily earners form a big part of society. MultiChoice is committed to long-term flexibility. If anything, Ka Weekie should lay a foundation for even more customer-centric innovations, not sudden shocks in pricing or service withdrawal.”

Emuk: Finally, Rinaldi, beyond the pricing and flexibility, what else should customers look forward to under the Ka Weekie campaign?

Rinaldi Jamugisa:
“The magic of Ka Weekie is that you don’t lose out on content. Customers will still enjoy the same rich variety of entertainment from the Premier League, LaLiga, and the best Nollywood blockbusters, to the latest series, news, telenovelas, and kids’ programming. It’s a small ticket with a big experience.”

“And as MultiChoice Uganda,” Rinaldi added, “we continue to innovate and, most importantly, we continue to listen to our customers. Their needs and feedback drive everything we do.”

With Ka Weekie, MultiChoice Uganda seems to be opening a new chapter in how Ugandans consume television content — one that prioritizes affordability, flexibility, and customer freedom. Time will tell how widely this model catches on, but for now, it certainly sounds like a win for entertainment lovers across the country.
