Security has been beefed up in Nigeria’s Katsina state after President Muhammadu Buhari’s advance convoy was ambushed.
The unidentified gunmen attacked the president’s team last evening, killing two people, the presidency confirmed in a statement.
Fortunate enough for the president, he was not in the convoy of cars carrying the advance team of security guards and other staff.
They were heading to the presidency’s hometown of Daura, near the border with Niger, to prepare for the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday.
The President has described the act as “sad and unwelcome.”
Local reports have indicated that the attackers opened fire on the convoy from ambush positions but were repelled by the military, police and DSS personnel accompanying the convoy.
According to the latest reports, two people in the convoy are receiving treatment for the minor injuries they suffered from the attack, but all the other personnel, staff and vehicles made it safely to Daura.
