OBONGI: Fungaroo would be dead if it wasn’t for us-Police

Police in Obongi district Saturday January 9,2021 rescued Hon. Fungaroo Caps from being lynched by angry mob of mainly youths in the night of Saturday 09th/01/2021 at about 11:45 pm. The community arrested Hon. Fungaroo Caps, the incumbent MP who is also a candidate under FDC ticket, alleging that he was bribing voters in the night of Saturday in Aliba Sub county.

The youths gathered around him, put him down as some attempted to injure him around the eye. When police was tipped off on this, they rushed to the scene to rescue him from the angry mob.

SP Angucia Josephine PRO West Nile and North West Nile regions, said while at Obongi police station after his rescue, Fungaroo was questioned as to what he was doing at Aliba late in the night at curfew time,”he was then charged with an offence of Negligent Act likely to spread infection of disease, that is COVID-19 under section 171 of Penal code Act and issued police bond to go for treatment immediately since he had some injury around the eye.”

It is alleged that later in the night, he instead mobilised his supporters to attack shops belonging to NRM supporters and police station as well as the barracks while claiming that he was beaten by the NRM supporters and police. However DPC Obongi commanded a team of officers to disperse them in the night.

Reports indicate that Fungaroo is Sunday, mobilising people in Gimara sub county for a revenge attack but police is monitoring the situation so as to prevent it.

Angucia however cited that, “as we are heading towards the end of campaigns, there is a lot of Political pressure to win more votes, therefore this pressure should not force Candidates and their supporters to take desperate moves by breaking electoral laws, guidelines and SOPs on COVID-19. On the other side, mob Justice is unlawful, suspected criminal acts should instead be reported to police for proper management.”
