Omugurusi Karwemera died on Sunday morning at around 4am at Rugarama Hospital where he has been receiving treatment of multiple organ failure due to old age which is the cause of his death.
The parish priest of Kitanga Catholic Parish, Rev. Fr. Gaetano Batanyenda who doubles as the chairperson Kigezi inter-religious council and vice chairperson of Kick Corruption out of Uganda has mourned the popular Runyankole-Rukiga local language author and translator, Omugurusi Festo Karewemera who passed on at the age of 95.
Gaetano said the deceased has left a strong legacy because he wasn’t sectarian in any way and besides his contributions towards maintaining local languages relevant, Mzee Festo was a pillar in Uganda and Africa.
‘The living, especially his family and we the elders should now take it crucial to protect his legacy. The best gift we can offer heroes is imitating their examples,’ he added.
The deceased is remembered for a range of historical concepts, especially authoring Runyankore-Rukiga content/books like Empandiika ya Runyankore-Rukiga,
Meanwhile, According to Robina Tugume the deceased’s daughter, Karwemera will be buried on Tuesday at his ancestral home in Bugarama, in Buhara subcounty Kabale district.
