World Wife Fund for Nature together (WWF) with Government Ministries, agencies,CSOs and other social formations including Rotarians, Scouts,Go Green Youth Networks have moved to advocate for total ban of single use plastic in the country.
This with the aim that waste is getting out of hand and increasingly choking the Country, polluting the air,water and soil that both people and water and wildlife need to survive.
During the Earth Hour 2021 launch,the population was advised to make better use of non plastic materials and only consider using reusable plastics rather than relying on single plastics that are harmful to the environment and human beings.
Speaking at the event held Thursday March 4,2021 at Uganda Media Center,David Duli ,the WWF Country Director revealed that man’s routine activities have done injustice to nature, causing alot of health concerns that affect both him and the animals and birds among others.
“The ongoing catastrophic climate crisis still hangs over us and demands our focus.However,the ever-deepening crisis of nature and biodiversity loss must be put in the sportlight too-even more so in these times when we face the Covid-19 pandemic,” Duli said.
Duli added,” Nature underpins the health, well being and prosperity of everyone on Earth.Unfortunately,too many of us today do not value it’s economic, social and environmental importance enough.”
The Earth Hour 2021 running under the theme: ‘Keep it Green and clean’ according to Mr Duli,is aimed at mobilizing Ugandans to address the rapid deforestation by planting trees,adoption of use of renewable energy technologies and most importantly, taking a firm stand on plastic pollution in the country.
While making his remarks,Gen.Katumba Wamala the Chief Commissioner of Uganda Scouts rallied respect nature and advocate for it’s protection since it’s a source of food, energy,water and air among other important aspects.
“As the race to the extract Uganda’s natural resources heats up,there should be a ‘win-win’ situation for people and nature.No doubt,nature is an important component in Uganda.It is a source of food, energy, water and air.
It is a lifeline for the Ugandan populace.Beyond the beauty and inspiration,nature supports most of the county’s growing economies.”
He added,”Uganda for example,is home to a vast variety and abundance of the world’s biological and natural resources.The country is home to several UNESCO heritage and Ramsar sites.”
Katumba applauded WWF for raising awareness on such crucial aspects concerning nature,which when protected,will make a world a better place for everyone and animals to live in.
